NK teams cruise in track

New Kent’s host Trojans won nine individual events and swept the relays in cruising to a season-opening track win over a trio of Group A opponents. New Kent scored 157 points to Middlesex’s 45, Charles City’s 25, and West Point’s 8 in the March 12 meet.

The Lady Trojans, meanwhile, received double individual wins from Chelsey Stertz, Arica Fowler, and Kayla Christian and also dominated in relays to race away with 150.5 points. West Point scored 61.5 followed by Charles City’s 12 and Middlesex’s 5.

Tedmund Dabney emerged as New Kent’s lone double winner on the boys’ side, taking shot put with a heave of 39-8 and claiming discus with a toss of 107-11. The Trojans also got wins from Paul Kearney in 110 meter high hurdles (16.0), Austin Smith at 1600 meters (5:03.5), Donovan Gipson in the 400 (55.7), Matt Fultz in 300 meter intermediates (44.4), Ethan Emmons in the 800 (2:07), and Michael Lull at 3200 meters (11:19). Charles City’s Reynard Black won the high jump with a leap of 5-10.

On the girls’ side, Stertz won shot put (31-8) and discus (74-1), Fowler took high jump (4-4) and 400 meters (70.8), and Christian claimed triple jump (33-0) and the 200 (25.7).

Other individual winners were Jalesa Johnson in the 100 (13.75), Kelly Downs at 1600 meters (5:57.6), and Tyler Savage in the 800 (2:38). Charles City’s Hilary Wynn prevailed in long jump (12-7).
