Defense keys Charles City’s 54-42 conquest of West Point

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:52 pm

Doubling down on and sometimes triple-teaming last year’s Tidewater District player of the year paid huge dividends for Charles City’s Lady Panthers against West Point’s invading Pointers. The hosts held the Pointers’ Kristen Medlin to 12 points, and no one else on the Pointer roster picked up the scoring slack. Charles City went on to a 54-42 triumph, upping its record to 3-1 last Friday. “That was our game plan,” Charles City coach Andre Jones said concerning the ploy to surround Medlin. “We call it our collapse defense. We collapsed in front of her and behind her and denied her…

Williams takeover lifts Lady Panthers past Lady Trojans

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:50 pm

Although Charles City coach Andre Jones declined to admit it, staying close to New Kent’s host Lady Trojans for three quarters and then putting the ball in the hands of guard Jolisa Williams for the crucial fourth proved to be sound strategy for his Lady Panthers. Charles City rallied from seven points down in the final period as Williams scored 15 of her game-high 31 points to help topple New Kent 47-38. Last Thursday’s outcome upped Charles City’s record to 2-1 while New Kent fell to 0-2. Afterward, Jones said Williams taking over the game wasn’t written into his game…

Supervisors accept school budget cuts

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:42 pm

Charles City’s Board of Supervisors has accepted budget cuts submitted by the county’s School Board, even though the reductions are less than the 5 percent decrease requested. Supervisors, however, are planning to meet with school officials to discuss how the remaining reductions can be made. Supervisors accepted $155,000 in budget cuts submitted to the board by school Superintendent Janet Crawley during their Nov. 27 meeting. That leaves $160,000 to be found to match the 5 percent goal, which equates to $315,000. In a letter to supervisors, Crawley detailed the cuts to date– $120,000 in instruction, $25,000 in transportation, and $5,000…

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:41 pm

New Kent High School is embarking on a project to not only honor those who have passed through the school’s doors in the past, but also provide scholarship money for students who will be departing via graduation. Dubbed the “Memory Brick” project, the school will soon begin selling bricks that will sport engraved messages. The finished bricks are then to become part of diagonal walkways approaching the main entrance to the existing high school. An engraved message can be a former student’s name and year of graduation or, perhaps, a former teacher or administrator with their years of tenure. Messages…

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:38 pm

Federal authorities may be taking over prosecution of two firearm charges lodged against a Chesapeake man who allegedly was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun when he was arrested this summer in New Kent County. But local authorities also got their shot at Antonio Donta Goodson who pleaded guilty to a third charge, driving after being declared a habitual offender, during a trial last Thursday in New Kent Circuit Court. Goodson, 39, of 3012 Parkside Drive #3, was arrested just after midnight on Aug. 3 after a State Police trooper responded to a report of a vehicle on fire on…

Amending bay preservation law postponed by NK board

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:36 pm

Action to bring New Kent’s ordinance that protects Chesapeake Bay waters into line with state law, and include a few extras not mandated by the state, has been postponed by the county Board of Supervisors. Board members are concerned the county’s version could further curtail individual property owners’ rights. At issue is land designated as Resource Protection Area (RPA) under provisions of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act. In New Kent, RPA acreage totals 31,379. The county, meanwhile, must be in compliance with state law, which is overseen by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). County environmental planning manager Amy…

NK School Board’s capital plan exceeds $30 million

By Alan Chamberlain | December 12, 2008 1:29 pm

Just over $30 million in capital improvement projects for New Kent schools are heading for consideration by the county’s Board of Supervisors. New Kent School Board members voted during their Dec. 3 meeting to approve a revised list of eight projects that includes a new 700-student elementary school with a price tag that now totals $20 million. A year ago, figures for the new school fell just under $17.4 million. School officials are basing the increased cost on state Department of Education estimates. State officials say an 80,000-square foot building is required for housing 700 students. Current building cost is…
