NK district tourney bid ends in loss
A quest for that elusive first Bay Rivers District soccer win plus a chance to get back to the district’s post-season tournament did not end in the result New Kent’s Lady Trojans had in mind.
Warhill’s visiting Lions took control midway through the first half of the May 11 encounter on the way to a 7-1 win, dropping New Kent to 0-7-1 in the district and 5-7-1 overall.
“We didn’t play very well tonight,” Lady Trojan coach Chad Honeycutt said. “The effort wasn’t there, and this has negated any chance we had of making the district tournament. We just didn’t show up, and we let them take over the contest.”
Warhill forward Chelsea Wolfe literally took over for the visitors. Wolfe built upon a 1-0 Lion lead with two straight goals to end the first half and another two scores after the second half got under way.
New Kent had little answer for the Lion attack, getting off just two shots before halftime and another four after the break. Lady Trojan forward Abbie McIninch averted a shutout in the final minute of play with a long-range shot that sailed over the head of Lion keeper Kelly Troup.
Warhill managed 16 shots. Lady Trojan keeper Casey Spencer registered five saves.
