Citing past issues of illegal operation, Charles City’s Board of Supervisors has denied a permit request that would allow the owner of a Rottweiler breeding kennel in the county to remain in business. In a unanimous 3-0 decision Tuesday night, supervisors turned down the request by Linda Howard, owner of Big Dog Kennel located at 5226 North Warriner Road. Supervisors pointed to Howard continuing to sell dogs after the county handed her a May 17, 2009 deadline to cease all operations. Last Dec. 17, county planning officials and the sheriff’s office set up a sting operation whereby an undercover officer…

A public hearing hosted by the Board of Supervisors on New Kent’s proposed $50.2 million budget for the next fiscal year attracted only a handful of county residents. Instead, last night’s session generated sharp exchanges between District 4 Supervisor Stran Trout and two of his colleagues over budget alterations Trout is pushing for approval. Trout is urging the board to refrain from closing the county’s trash stations one day per week as is currently proposed in next year’s budget. That suggestion appears to have strong board support. But Trout’s recommendations for chipping in money to help pave the way for…

Charles City’s Lady Panther softball team is flirting with a winning record and is closing out its most successful season in recent memory. The outcome evened Charles City’s record at 3-3 in the district and 5-5 overall. The Lady Panthers had little success in overcoming the early deficit thanks to Duke hurler Tiffany Rapp who struck out nine. The hosts were unable to mount a serious scoring threat…

Cashing in on frequent open scoring opportunities, New Kent’s Lady Trojans pulled away from Washington & Lee’s visiting Eagles for an 8-0 soccer triumph. The April 30 match, that ended 12 minutes short of regulation on a slaughter rule, raised New Kent’s record above the .500 mark to 5-4-1. “We’ve played so many tight games, it’s good to change things up and give other people some playing time,” said New Kent coach Chad Honeycutt. “We started off a little slow tonight, but we finished very well.” Lady Trojan Anna Black reversed the hosts’ sluggish start at the first half’s 24-minute…

Renee Silver tossed a two-hit shutout while striking out nine as New Kent’s Lady Trojans stunned York’s Bay Rivers District softball front-running Falcons 3-0. New Kent jumped on top to stay in the second inning after leadoff hitter Sarah Barnett reached base on a throwing error. Barnett took third on Nikki Jones’…

Paul Robinson’s two-run, walk-off double climaxed a determined New Kent Trojan rally from six runs down to overcome Lafayette’s visiting Rams 8-7 in Bay Rivers District baseball. After chipping away at what had been a 7-1 Ram lead, the host Trojans entered the final inning on the short end of a 7-4 score. But Hunter Pomfrey’s bases-loaded single sliced the margin to 7-6 before Robinson’s heroics clinched last Friday’s victory. “I don’t ever remember us being down by three runs against a Bay Rivers team in the bottom of the seventh inning and coming back to win,” said a much…

Three years ago, Mary Lou Gediman took the bold step of quitting her job to concentrate on writing. And the move is starting to pay off with the publication of her first novel. “Journeywoman,” the story of a divorcee whose uneventful life takes a dramatic turn thanks to advice from a Native American, became available on-line (print on demand) to the public through Amazon and Barnes and Noble in December. Now, the Providence Forge resident is striving to get her novel on bookstore shelves. “It’s been a lot of fun, and it’s been a journey,” she said, borrowing a bit…

Having an opportunity to steal money from a cash register drawer and then flee from law enforcement did not prompt him to walk into Rick’s Stop and Shop convenience store in Quinton last November. That’s the explanation Kenneth Lee Barnes delivered to Judge Thomas B. Hoover during the defendant’s May 3 sentencing in New Kent Circuit Court on charges of grand larceny and eluding police. “I wasn’t in the right state of mind,” Barnes told the judge. “I had no intention of doing that action. I went in to get a cold drink. I was dehydrated.” But Barnes, 49, of…
