Zip line rides are to be featured during Makemie Woods “Community Play Day.”

Makemie Woods, located near Barhamsville in New Kent County, is hosting a “Community Play Day” on Saturday, March 23, 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m..

Youth and adults can register for a flight on the “hand-stop” zip line course that has become one of the hallmarks of the camp’s program.

“An 82 year-old woman was one of the first people to fly on these lines,” recalls Mike Burcher, the camp’s director. “The take-off and landing points are ground level, and the cables cross ravines. Participants run or walk until the ground drops out from under, then fly to the other side where the ground slopes up. There is no climbing involved, which makes this adventure much easier than traditional lines that involve climbing.”

Archery, educational hikes, canoeing and a storytelling concert are also being offered.

“Our goal is to introduce a new generation to the beauty and adventure of Makemie Woods,” said Burcher. “I meet so many people in this region who say, ‘Makemie Woods! I went to camp there as a kid.’ Now we hope they will bring their own kids and grandkids to experience the fun.”

There is no charge for participation in the play day. Burcher hopes those who come will give generously to help sponsor children to come to the summer camp program and to help improve the facilities. Like most non-profits, Makemie Woods has had to restructure in response to the recession, and is seeking a new base of donors.

“We never want money to be the reason a child doesn’t come to camp,” she said.

Makemie Woods is accredited by the American Camp Association. Accreditation is based on a commitment by the camp to best practices– from “How to Choose A Camp-Safety Tips”– www.campparents.org.

Advanced reservations and a signed release form are required to fly on the zip lines. Participants must be at least 10 years of age and have a release signed by the parent if under 18.
