New Kent High senior wins Interfaith Council award
New Kent High School senior Christina Myatt is among 53 Richmond Metropolitan area high school students recognized by the Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond during the group’s 46th Annual Brotherhood Sisterhood Youth Awards held Feb. 28 at River Road Baptist Church in Henrico.
She is the daughter of Fe Myatt of Lanexa. She is a writer, editor and trailblazing leader at New Kent High School.
Although she does not share the same religion, every Wednesday night for about an hour and 15 minutes she volunteers at a local church to tutor students of racial minorities in subjects in which they struggle. She balances an active academic and extracurricular schedule, leading several clubs.
Her school activities include New Kent High School GSA, Literary Club, Spanish Club, Beta Club, Link Crew Leadership, and the Iliad for which she has been editor for two consecutive years.
She is a volunteer tutor for students of all grades and subjects at Second Liberty Baptist Church.
Students from parochial, private and public schools in the Richmond area received Brotherhood/Sisterhood awards for caring for others and improving human relations and inter-group understanding.
Award winners are selected based on ability to relate to others of different gender, race or religion; act as a voice of reason in potentially confrontational situations; show empathy with and understanding of those with limited physical and/or emotional capabilities; participate in activities that improve human relationships and inter-group understanding; and reach out to others both within the school or the greater community.
Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Daniel C. Smith, of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of World Studies, Department of World Religions.
