NKMS students win awards from NK Historical Society

Some of the first, second, and honorable mention winners in the poetry, comic strip, and newspaper article categories pose with their prizes. They are flanked by New Kent Historical Society president Camilla Tramuel (left) and second vice-president Preston Martin.

Sixth and seventh grade students from New Kent Middle School received awards last Saturday for achieving first or second place or honorable mention in the New Kent Historical Society’s School Essay Contest on New Kent County History.

Awards were presented in categories for poetry, comic strip, and newspaper article. In all, 39 entries were received.

First and second place winners by category are:

Poetry- Grade 6: 1. McKinley Chapman, 2. Jillian Schmid; Grade 7: 1. Kevin Cornelius, 2. Alex Owens.

Comic Strip- Grade 6: 1. C. J. Krawiec, 2. Jake Ferris; Grade 7: 1. Darius Jones, 2. Justen Stewart.

Newspaper Article- Grade 6: 1. Dylan Goins, 2. Austin Sharpe; Grade 7: 1. Diano M. Lloyd; 2. Connor Williamson.

Contestants receiving honorable mention were: Grade 6- Dominque Akrie-Williams, Colgin Tyler, Tate Estis, Daysha Goodlet, Nichelle Jones, Mary Lawson, Josh Mara, Ethan Oliva, Dean Powell, John Rechart, Breyden Smith, and Madison Williams.

Grade 7- Izabelle Addison, Meghan Coleson, Slater Gammon, Brittney Hall, Garrett Hall, Christopher Harris, Erin Highsmith, Ashby Holsapple, Bailee Jenkins, Nathaniel Kauf, Eric Lucy, Calope Martinez, Nathan Myatt, Jacob Rivera, and James Taylor.

The society’s second vice president, Preston Martin, developed the essay concept and worked with middle school Creative Writing Club sponsor Sarah Hodges to coordinate the contest. The society plans to hold the contest annually.
