Library group holding first basket auction
Friends of Heritage Public Library is holding its First Annual Book Basket Silent Auction May 1-11.
The event is to raise funds to support the library’s summer reading program, which helps students bridge the summer gap created by summer vacation away from academic pursuits.
Individuals, businesses, civic groups, and churches spent the month of April creating themed baskets, each based on a book or audio CD. Those baskets are going to be on display during regular business hours at both the New Kent and Charles City branches. Bidding will close at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.
While the baskets are on display for bidding, the public is also asked to vote for their favorite basket. A grand prize will be awarded to the maker of the best basket.
Last year almost 600 Charles City and New Kent County residents participated in the summer reading program.
