Letter to the editor: Thanks supporters of scholarship program

By Community Member | May 9, 2013 11:10 am

New Kent County Parks and Recreation implemented a Youth Sports Scholarship Program five years ago.

To fund the scholarship program, businesses and organizations make a monetary donation. A small portion of the donation provides recognition for the business, or organization, on a wind banner at one of the county’s sports fields.

The remaining donation goes directly to a youth sports scholarship program. Between fall 2012 and spring 2013, the scholarship fund released close to $2,000 to help youth play sports in New Kent County.

The scholarship is based on household income and the recipient must be a county resident. Despite economic challenges, the 2013 program commitment is outstanding.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the following for supporting the New Kent Parks and Recreation Youth Sports Scholarship Program:

Antonio’s Pizza, Becky Ringley State Farm, Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma, Brockwell’s Septic, Chem Treat, C&F Bank, Coastal Plains Environmental, Corinth Baptist Church, Hawthorne Dry Cleaning, Hopewell Baptist Church, Lee-Hy Paving Corporation, Maidstone Dental, New Kent Animal Hospital, New Kent Christian Church, New Kent Gymnastics Center LLC, New Kent Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, Rappahannock Concrete Corporation, Simmon’s Electrical Service, Vincent Funeral Home, and Wood’s Body Shop.

I would also like to extend appreciation to parks and recreation staff, Jason Baldwin and Holly Gifford, for their dedication and support. Again, thank you to the community for supporting youth sports in New Kent County.
