Bay Transit has announced a public hearing on Thursday, July 18, 1 p.m. at Port Town Village, 111 Port Town Lane, Urbanna, on a proposed fare increase.

Director Ken Pollock announced the public transit provider recommendations for a fare increase for transit service in the region.

Currently, fares are $1.00 for a one-way trip within New Kent and Charles City counties. The new proposal would double that cost to $2.00 per trip and a 10-trip ticket book would rise from $8.00 to $12.00. Rides to Richmond and Williamsburg would also increase to $3.00 each way.

“It is still a good deal considering the size of many of our counties and the long distances people travel to access services and employment,” said Pollock.

Bay Transit’s fare increase proposal will be presented to the Bay Aging Board of Directors for consideration at the end of July.

Transportation for the public hearing is available at no charge by calling 877-869-6046 by July 17, 12 p.m.
