Freedom flag presented

New Kent Rotary Club president Jackie Smith (left) and member Stran Trout (center) presented Freedom Flags to Sheriff Wakie Howard (right), and Fire Chief Rick Opett (not pictured) at the club’s Aug. 19 meeting. The flag has been adopted by the Virginia General Assembly as the official flag commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The center stripes represent the World Trade Center, and the five-sided design represents the Pentagon. Other stripes honor those who died on that day, including the first responders, the passengers who brought down the plane in Pennsylvania, and those in the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
