‘Move over’ law to be enforced
Virginia State Police have partnered with Nationwide Insurance to promote the “move over” law to promote public safety and personnel and all who drive tow trucks and road maintenance vehicles.
Since 2003, 138 on-duty law enforcement officers have been killed on the nation’s highways, being the fourth-leading cause of death for a law enforcement officer.
Implemented in 2002, Virginia’s law requires drivers to change to another travel lane or, when unable to, cautiously pass emergency personnel stopped on the side of the road. The law also applies to highway maintenance vehicles and tow trucks with flashing amber lights.
