Letter to the editor: Thanks stranger for help during holidays

On Dec. 4, I drove vehicle to work and on the way home, I decided to stop at a store in Bottoms Bridge. When I returned to my vehicle, it would not start. I called on friends and family, but even a cousin with jumper cables culd not get my car started.

Soonafter, a total stranger asked me if we needed help as I re-entered the store to purchase a soda to melt the battery corrosion. After declining the first offer and seeing the removal of corrosion wasnt’ working, the stranger returned to assist us. He said I had a loose cable, but we had no tools to tighten it to get the car started again. He said “ I will run home and get some tools and come right back.”

When he left, I said to my cousin that he wasnt’ coming back, but a few minutes later he arrived not only with the tools but with another battery. My cousin, stranger, and brother who just arrived pulled out the old battery and replaced it with a new one.

I tried offering the nice man cash and groceries, but he refused, saying “The only thing I want you to do is if you see someone in need, stop and help them.”

This was a true act of kindness. I was so overwhelmed of the generosity that I hugged and thanked him.

I never got his name, but this filled my heart with joy to know that this world is still full of kind people. I am forever thankful for his generosity. The world would be a better place if we had more people like that gentleman.

We all should have more kindness in our hearts. Merry Christmas!!!
