Letter to the editor: Says county needs to unite in time of crisis

The county of Charles City is not immune to revenue crisis. This time, it was triggered by Waste Management’s apparent breach of contract. We as citizens must overcome the crippling habit of depsending so heavily on one source of monetary revenue and allow this county to become business friendly.

Although the landfill has seemingly dumped on us, our problems are rooted much deeper. The truth of the matter is onlay a limited amount of support can be found for big ideas that will propel us into the 21st century.

For far too long, decision making has been influenced by the vocal 10 percent, while the rest of us has sat on the banks, drinking from the river of silence. After sliding into reality regarding the school budget, many residents vented their anger during a recent town hall meeting.

I am also concerned and wis it was possible to fully fund the schools, because a weak educational system will not keep nor attract young families here; the growth is the primary factor to companies locating to this county.

The logical question is what do we do next? First, we need to stop blaming the current governing body for something that has been simmering for years and then start working towards a resolution with our most prize natural resource; our good-hearted citizens.
