Letter to the Editor: Says check the facts on candidate before June 10
On Tuesday, June 10, a Republican primary elecition will be held in the 7th Congressional District that includes New Kent and Hanover counties. The winner of that election will become the Congressman for that district due to no Democrat challenger. As such, the race is between Dave Brat and incumbent Eric Cantor.
Brat has a Master’s Degree from Princeton Seminary and a Ph.D. from American University. He has taught economics and ethics at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland for 18 years and has been the chair of the economics department for the past six.
Cantor, on the other hand, has been Congressman for the 7th District for the past 14 years. When he was first elected, he was like you and me- a common person with grassroot values. Since then, he has amassed a personal fortune estimated to be in the $10 million range and has abandoned his conservative values. Sadly, he has adopted a “selfie” attitude that many incumbent politicians acquire after having had political power too long.
Cantor apparently has become threatened by Brat’s accelerating campaign and popularity. Ironically, Cantor has started running radio and television ads that claim Brat is a “liberal” professor who worked for Tim Kaine to raise taxes. Nothing could be further from the truth, as Brat always has been a conservative Republican. The committee he worked on had nothing to do with taxes and is strictly prohibited by law to make policy or provide tax recommendations to any agency.
If you believe that Cantor is lying, then you need to go to the polls and vote for Brate on June 10. Brat’s conservative beliefs and platform are on his website www.davebratforcongress.com.
