Letter to the editor: Thanks Liberty Baptist, NK schools for service
I would like to commend Superintendent Dr. Rick Richardson and transportation director Stephen King for their help during the May 10 weekend.
The Law Enforcement United-Police Memorial bike ride had just reached New Kent in Lanexa when a severe storm broke. The group of over 300 riders were forced to find shelter from the lightning and rain back at Liberty Baptist Church. The buildings were locked so they huddled under the pavilion and against the buildings although there was not enough coverage from them.
Church members Butch and Janet Gay were quick to respond and came to open the church for shelter and refreshments. By the time the storm cleared, it was evident the group would not have time to make it to their reserved hotel rooms in Henrico before sundown. The group’s support team did not have the means to carry everyone, so I contacted
Dr. Richardson for help with transportation. Dr. Richardson readily approved the use of a school bus and driver to shuttle riders to Henrico. Stephen King came out and picked up the bus for us and was extremely helpful with the riders and even drove the bus himself.
New Kent School System has always had a great relationship with our Sheriff’s Office which has continued under Dr. Richardson’s guidance. We appreciate the support and appreciation for their continued support and assistance, as well as gratitude to Liberty Baptist Church.
Farrar “Wakie” Howard Jr.
Sheriff
New Kent County
