Letter to the editor: Says taxpayer money wasted by VDOT

I’m writing today to express about my concern about VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation). I have been complaining about Route 60 eastbound for a few years. From Route 106 to South Garden Road, the five mile stretch has what I call “speed bumps” on the road. These bumps will shake you, knock air pressure out of your tires, and ruin your front end.

I want to know why the roads aren’t being maintained properly to begin with? Over the past few years I have seen VDOT fix a few spots, but the work is sloppy, poor, and it doesn’t last anytime. Recently, a contractor came out and repaired the road with concrete and did good quality work. Shortly afterwards, VDOT came out to work on potholes and imperfections to the road. I was pleased to see them on that part of Route 60, but I want to know why our tax dollars are being spend and utilized poorly.

How do you fix a speed bump in one lane and leave an identical one in the adjacent lane five feet away? New Kent supervisor Ron Stiers asked VDOT the same question and supposedly are going to spend more taxpayer money to redo the work that has already been done.

It would appear that VDOT doesn’t make a product to sell and they don’t rely on a profit to stay in business. Our taxpayer money just keeps rolling in, and it’s time that people start standing up and demanding our tax dollars to be used responsibly!
