Above, family members unveil the historic marker in honor of Samuel Wilson Crump during Wednesday afternoon’s ceremony in front of New Kent’s Historical Courthouse. Crump was the first African-American to serve on New Kent’s Board of Supervisors in 1955, serving a term of eight years and fighting for the rights to desegregate schools. Below, a close-up of the marker reveals just a few details of Crump’s influence in both New Kent County and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
