NK girl scouts at submarine christening

Members of Girl Scout Troops 16 and 565 based out of New Kent attended the christening ceremony of the Nuclear Submarine Arkansas SSN 800 in Newport News on Saturday, Dec. 7. The ceremony was sponsored by the “Little Rock Nine”, nine students who faced desegregation in schools after the Supreme Court ruled in the 1954 case “Brown vs. The Board of Education” that racial segregation was unconstitutional. Pictured with the girl scout troops are three members of the Little Rock Nine, Carlotta Walls, Elizabeth Eckford, and Gloria Ray.
