Patrick Henry’s Demand reenactment to take place in New Kent
The 250th anniversary reenactment of Patrick Henry’s Demand to the British will take place in New Kent.
The event will commemorate Patrick Henry, who led a volunteer militia on May 2-4, 1775, from Hanover to Williamsburg to demand royal Governor Lord Dunmore the return of gunpowder taken from the powder magazine in the middle of Williamsburg in April 1775.
The event will begin on May 2, 7 p.m., with a talk of the Spring of 1775 by Mike Cecere in the New Kent Boardroom. On Saturday and Sunday, encampments will open at New Kent Ordinary at 10 a.m., with the New Kent Resolves being adopted at 11 a.m., which will be followed by a drill and demonstration. Patrick Henry will arrive at 12 p.m. each day and address those who are gathered, with a follow-up demonstration at 2 p.m. before activities conclude at 4 p.m.
The event is free to the public and is presented by the New Kent Historical Society, New Kent Historic Commission. The event is sponsored by the New Kent Ordinary.
