With continuous accidents and ongoing speeding in work zones on Interstate 64, New Kent Sheriff’s Office has announced that automated speed enforcement in work zones will begin on July 1.

“We’ve measured a dramatic increase in vehicle crashes on the section of Interstate 64 that falls within New Kent County,” said Sheriff Lee Bailey in a press release. “In 2023, there were a total of 240 crashes. In 2024, that number grew to 444 vehicle crashes in our section.”

New Kent County will have a LiDAR camera mounted to the bed of a truck. The camera will monitor traffic in each lane and measure the speed. Vehicles going over 11 miles per hour in the construction speed limit will be in violation and issued a warning over the first 30 days. Live enforcement will begin on Aug. 1, with vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 11 miles per hour receiving a $100 fine via summons in the mail. Other law enforcement will also patrol the interstate in regular intervals and shifts.
