Heritage Public Library teaming with AARP for free tax return preparation program

Heritage Public Library is partnering with the American Association of Retired People (AARP) for free tax return preparation at both the Charles City and New Kent Branch.

Starting in Feb. 2026, taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) under $84,000 will have access to computers and software provided by the tax-aid program to prepare their own taxes at the library branches. The initiative will assist community members in preparing and e-filing federal and state tax returns at no cost with assistance from IRS-certified tax counselors.

“Filing your own tax return can be a valuable learning experience,” commented Stacey Tromblee, Director of Heritage Public Library. “It fosters a deeper understanding of the tax system and supports more informed financial decisions in the future.”

Volunteers will offer assistance on many tax topics, but patrons will be responsible for ensuring the completeness and accuracy of their returns.

“This service empowered individuals to take charge of their tax preparation with expert support, offering a valuable community resource,” Tromblee concluded.

Specific scheduling details and hours of operation will be announced prior to the program beginning in Feb. 2026.
