Recent felony arrests made in NK

Two men face at least one felony charge each following their recent arrests by New Kent sheriff’s personnel.

Myles Konrad Beverly, 19, of the 9400 block of Boulevard Rd., Providence Forge, is charged with one count of grand larceny. Beverly allegedly stole a handgun last month from a county residence. Detective Farrar Howard III arrested the suspect on Feb. 8.

Eugene Meredith Otey, 38, of the 9500 block of Richmond Rd., Toano, is charged with 10 counts of forgery and uttering and three counts of obtaining money by false pretenses. The charges stem from checks allegedly stolen last month in another jurisdiction and forged and passed in New Kent. Deputy Tim Davis arrested the suspect on Feb. 7.

Arrest made for NK road sign thefts

A New Kent man faces 10 grand larceny counts stemming from his recent arrest for allegedly stealing street name and other highway signs in the county over the past year.

Deputies discovered stolen signs on Jan. 29 inside the residence of Justin Tyler McLaughlin, 22, of the 6300 block of Hopewell Road, when they responded along with rescue personnel to a medical emergency call. Deputy David Teagle arrested the suspect, who has since been released on bond.

State’s 4 p.m. fire law starts Feb. 15

Virginia’s 4 p.m. Burning Law goes into effect Feb. 15. The law prohibits fires before 4 p.m. each day until April 30 if the fire is within 300 feet of woodland, brushland, or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials.

A violation is a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine. In addition to the criminal violation, those who allow a fire to escape are liable for the cost of suppressing the fire as well as any damage caused to others’ property.

Clarification

In the Jan. 31 edition story about Haupt’s Store being sold, it was reported that new owners Roy Kaba and Saleem Valiani also own and operate Adkins Store. To clarify matters, Glenda Adkins owns the Adkins Store building. Kaba and Valiani own the business, which includes rights to the Adkins Store name and the store’s contents.
