CC budget proposal draws little comment at hearing

By Andre Jones | April 25, 2013 12:55 pm

Charles City school board chairwoman Barbara Crawley and superintendent of schools Janet Crawley were the only two speakers during Charles City Board of Supervisors’ budget public hearing on April 17.

The $20,951,528 budget proposal contains no tax increases.

Speaking for her colleagues, Barbara Crawley thanked Charles City supervisors for their support.

“Even though we were not fully funded, we are grateful for what we have received,” she said.

The superintendent also thanked supervisors, understanding the task at hand as they tackle the proposed budget.

“I hope you can help us in any way you can,” said the superintendent. “With your help, we want to eliminate the negativity that is portrayed in our school system. We look forward to working with you all to combat naysayers.”

After the public hearing closed, supervisors questioned school officials on the textbook funds.

“Have you thought about electronic textbooks?” asked District 1 representative Gilbert Smith.

“We have one class that uses an online textbook,” responded Janet Crawley. “But if we do that we have to have a computer for every child. Right now we don’t have the capability to provide each student with a computer, but we know that most coursework is moving in that direction.”

“I have a daughter that teaches in New Kent,” commented District 2 supervisor Bill Coada. “Even though she has a textbook, she uses a majority of handouts.”

“Textbooks are used as a source,” countered the superintendent. “By state mandate we must adopt them.”

County administrator Zach Trogdon advised supervisors of his meeting with the superintendent. Trogdon said schools will probably be receiving more local funds this year. The new dollar amount is $4,824,312 according to Janet Crawley. That figure also has restrictions in regards to cuts that can be made by the school board (see related story in this issue).

Supervisors adjourned the meeting and will reconvene at their regular meeting on April 23.
