Charles City thief accepts plea deal

A Charles City man who broke into two vehicles to steal valuables accepted a plea deal from Commonwealth’s attorney Rob Tyler during proceedings in Charles City Circuit court on June 7.

Tyron Lorenzo Allen, 27, of 6213 Old Union Road, Charles City, accepted amended charges on one count of grand larceny and two misdemeanor counts of petty larceny in relation to break-ins that occurred from December 2012 to last January. Allen admitted he broke into the vehicle of George Smith on Dec. 17, 2012 and Jan. 27 of this year, as well as Joey Adkins on Jan. 9 of this year. The defendant stole sunglasses, coins, an Ipod Touch, and car stereo speakers.

Under the plea agreement, Allen received a 20-year sentence on the grand larceny charge with all but two years, two months suspended. One year on each of the misdemeanor counts were suspended. Allen also must pay $870 in restitution.

Father, son duo arrested in CC

Two Charles City men were arrested by Charles City sheriff’s office after conducting a search in relation to home break-ins.

David Yates Sr., 44, and David Yates Jr., 22, both of the 4500 block of Rocking Horse Lane, were arrested on June 4 in connection to burglaries in the neighboring area.

According to police reports, upon search of the Yates’ residence, stolen items were discovered, as well as marijuana plants grown in a nearby wooded area. Other stolen property was recovered at pawn shops in the Richmond area.

Each of the two men are charged with one count each of burglary and grand larceny. Yates Sr. also is charged with possession of stolen property stemming from an incident in Maryland.

Both men also face one count each of possession of burglary tools, grand larceny, and damaging or trespassing on public utility property in connection with a Jan. 6 break-in of a Virginia Dominion power substation on Chambers Road.

Both men were being held at Riverside Regional Jail without bond.

Correction

In the June 6 story ‘Unprofessionalism comment appalls CC supervisors,” the correct work session date for Charles City’s school board was April 25, not April 30.

Also, a comment by District 2 supervisor Bill Coada said that “In comparison to school districts in similar size, we are seventh in the state [as far as counties] in the amount of money we spend per pupil.” The quote should say “In comparison to 94 county school districts in similar size, we are the seventh highest in local dollar amount that we spend per pupil.”

In an engagement announcement last issue, the groom-to-be was misidentified as Edward Clyde Lambert. The groom’s name is Matthew Edwin Lambert. A corrected announcement can be found on page 6.
