NK sheriff’s office arrests CC man
A Charles City man has been arrested after allegedly shoplifting from a business in Providence Forge.
New Kent Sheriff’s Office arrested John Alvin Brown, 44, of 8531 Old Elam Cemetery Road, Charles City, on one count of felony shoplifting (third of subsequent offense).
According to the police report, on Aug. 21, Brown entered Family Dollar in Providence Forge. While being observed by management on video surveillance, Brown allegedly concealed three cans of tire shine and three bottles of motor oil and proceeded to exit the store.
With the assistance of Charles City Sheriff’s Office, New Kent authorities were able to identify Brown, who later turned himself in. He was being held on bond and arraigned on Aug. 26 in New Kent General District Court.
In an unrelated matter, Connor Thopmson O’leary, 27, of 3535 S. Woodland Circle, Quinton, has been charged with burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana.
On Aug. 31, a homeowner on Club drive reported a residence break-in that occurred earlier. After obtatining information of a vehicle description, it was located at the Star Motel where O’Leary’s vehicle was located. A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, revealing loaded firearm, prescription medication, and marijuana. He was being held without bond and arraigned Sept. 3 in New Kent General Court.
Harness racing begins September 18
Colonial Downs Fall Harness Racing season begins Sept. 18 and continues through Oct. 27.
Races are Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, commencing at 1 p.m. with the gates opening at 12 p.m. Ten harness daily races will be held and opening weekend will coincide with the New Kent County fair on Sept. 21.
General admission is $3 with kids 12 and under are free. Turf Club admission is $5-$10, with a $5 carload special on opening weekend that includes parking fair/racing admission for all passengers.

NK Sheriff’s Office seeks information
New Kent Sheriff’s Office are seeking information on recent crimes that occurred in the county.
On Sept. 1, a Dominion Power substation equipment was found destroyed shortly before midnight at the Rockahock Road location. Police believe the incident occurred between 10:30-11:30 p.m.
On Sept. 4, a burglary occured at Eltham Auto Clinic, the second to the business in less than a month. Currency and inspection stickers were taken and police believe the crime took place between the hours of 1 a.m. to 3 a.m.
On Sept. 8, a shooting was reported at the Cumberland Community Center after a large social gathering. No injuries were reported.

In the Aug. 29 story “New Kent test scores above state average, CC vows to improve,” the enrollment for New Kent County schools was listed exceeding 2,000. The correct enrollment for schools is 3,000.
