Construction on the Virginia Capital Trail will cause delays on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) on Dec. 4-5 to install beams for bridges along the trail.

VDOT residency engineer Mike Cade said motorists can expect anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour delay as beams are unloaded from cranes to the bridge. Those cranes will occupy the entire highway as work is expected to occur betweeen 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on the aforementioned dates.

Beam deliveries will commence at Courthouse Creek near Charles City’s Courthouse and move eastward, making stops at two bridges near Wilcox Neck Road and return westbound to Parrish Hill.

Charles City Sheriff’s office and VDOT has implemented teh following detours to bypass the construction:

–Route 5 through travelers are encouraged to use Interstate 64 or Route 60 to bypass the work.

To bypass the Wilcox Neck Road area work:

–Route 5 east: Take Sturgeon Point Road (Route 614) north to The Glebe Lane (Route 615) east to Wilcox Neck Road (Route 623) south back to Route 5.

–Route 5 west: Take Wilcox Neck Road (Route 623) north to The Glebe Lane (Route 615) west to Sturgeon Point Road (Route 614) south back to Route 5.

To bypass the Parrish Hill area work:

–Route 5 east: Take The Glebe Lane (Route 615) north to Sturgeon Point Road (Route 614) south back to Route 5.

–Route 5 west: Take Sturgeon Point Road (Route 614) north to The Glebe Lane (Route 615) south back to Route 5.
