Vehicle accidents: NK 18, CC 0

Eighteen traffic accidents have occurred in New Kent County since snow began falling in the area on Tuesday. Luckily, there have been no reports of injuries, only damage to the vehicles in all of the crashes, state police say.

There have been no reports of vehicle accidents in Charles City County, said state police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Molnar.

All but one of the crashes in New Kent occurred on Interstate 64. Details on the number of vehicles involved and extent of damage were not available.

NK vehicle break-ins investigated

A series of vehicle break-ins in the Colonies subdivision located near Lanexa in New Kent is under investigation by the county sheriff’s office.

Break-ins have occurred during the late night and early morning hours over the past several months. Thieves primarily are targeting vehicles that have been left unlocked and are stealing items found inside. The sheriff’s office reports that on one occasion, thieves entered a garage to gain access to a vehicle.

The sheriff’s office is reminding residents to lock their vehicles as well as their homes at all times. Anyone observing suspicious activity or with information about the break-ins should call the sheriff’s office at 966-9500.

NK man charged with abduction

A New Kent County man is being held in jail without bond after allegedly abducting and assaulting his girlfriend.

Deandrew Lamont Jones, 33, of the 20400 block of Tabernacle Road in Barhamsville, is charged with one count each of felony abduction (by force, intimidation, or deception) and misdemeanor domestic assault of a family member in connection with an incident that the New Kent Sheriff’s Office said occurred on Jan. 2. The incident was not reported to authorities until Jan. 7.

Deputy Wyatt Johnston arrested Jones on Jan. 8. According to a sheriff’s office report, the alleged victim was not injured and no firearms were involved in the incident. A protective order has been issued against the suspect.

Quinton man arrested on drug charge

New Kent Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Quinton man for allegedly distributing a controlled substance.

Shane Wescott Matthews, 25, of the 3400 block of Teakwood Court, was arrested on Jan. 13 on one count of distributing a controlled substance (schedule I or II).

According to the arrest report, a New Kent officer witnessed the transaction in the Bottoms Bridge area. Matthews was pulled over shortly afterwards and arrested. He was being held on $1,000 secured bond.

Burglary information sought in NK

New Kent Sheriff’s Office seeks information on incidents occurring throughout the month:

–On Jan. 14, New Kent Sheriff’s Office received a call for a burglary at Denton Concrete in Lanexa. According to the report, unknown suspects entered the building and stole several tools during the nighttime hours.

–On Jan. 15, New Kent Sheriff’s Office received a call that several storage units were broken into the All American Mini-Storage facility located in Providence Forge. When deputies arrived, they observed several locks were cut and items inside units had been rummaged through.

–On Jan. 20, a report of a daytime burglary occurred at the 19000 block of Eltham Road. Deputies reported several items were stolen from inside upon their arrival and they believe the break-in occurred between 9-10 a.m.
