Two arrested after NK drug bust

A New Kent County man and a Petersburg man face drug distribution charges in the aftermath of an investigation into narcotics trafficking in New Kent conducted by the county sheriff’s office and the Twin Rivers Drug Task Force.

Authorities arrested Reginald J. Carter 42, of the 3000 block of Quaker Road, Quinton, on March 20 at the suspect’s home and charged the suspect with three counts of heroin distribution.

That same day, authorities charged Jeremiah J. Harrison, 28, of the 100 block of Marshall St., Petersburg, with three counts of cocaine distribution. Harrison was served warrants in Henrico Jail East where he was being held on other charges.

Both suspects, who were targeted in a series of controlled drug buys utilizing undercover informants, are being held without bond.

Both were indicted on the charges sealed earlier this month by a New Kent Circuit Court grand jury.

Amtrak stops in NK after argument

An argument involving passengers onboard an Amtrak train en route through New Kent County forced the train to make an unscheduled stop. New Kent sheriff’s deputies then boarded the train and ultimately arrested one of the passengers.

According to a sheriff’s office report, the incident occurred March 25 when sheriff’s dispatch received a call from Amtrak regarding the disturbance. The eastbound train stopped near Providence Forge where deputies boarded and began interviewing passengers. All passengers aboard the car where the disturbance occurred exited the train.

New Kent Lt. Joey McLaughlin said two passengers had engaged in an argument over race. The dispute then escalated, causing Amtrak employees to take action and contact authorities.

McLaughlin described one of the arguing passengers, identified as Kameshia J. Reed, 33, of the 1100 block of Bellview Boulevard, Alexandria, as “more aggressive and more argumentative than the other passenger.”

Deputies removed Reed from the train at the request of the train’s conductor. Further investigation led to discovery of marijuana in Reed’s possession. She was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and released on a summons.

“The Amtrak people wanted her off the train, but did not want to press any charges,” McLaughlin said. “The other passenger was allowed to remain on the train.”

Reed was transported to a bus station in Richmond. The train, meanwhile, continued on to its destination without further incident.

Woman arrested for embezzlement

A Richmond woman is now in custody after allegedly stealing more than $19,000 from her employer over a two-year period.

Mary Beth Andre, 50, of the 6500 block of Charles City Road, was arrested last Sunday by New Kent Sheriff’s deputies after an investigation.

According to the police report, Deputy E. McIntyre investigated the matter entailing the embezzling of funds from Operation Catnip of Richmond, a company based in New Kent. Information pointed to the suspect taking the $19,000 in cash from 2011-13, leading to her arrest.

Andre has been charged with five counts of felony embezzlement and was being held on $15,000 secured bond.

Liberty Landing hearing postponed

A public hearing for the development on Liberty Landing scheduled for April 10 has been postponed.

After discussions with New Kent Supervisors at a March 26 work session, the decision to delay the public hearing was made.

Representatives of Liberty Landing requested supervisors to schedule a special meeting for a public hearing in late April. Currently, the public hearing is tentatively set for the supervisors’ monthly meeting in May.
