Forty-four members of Charles City High School’s Class of 2014 received advice from outgoing superintendent of schools Dr. Janet Crawley during May 30 commencement ceremonies.

Crawley delivered three “pearls of wisdom” in a capacity filled gymnasium, emphasizing to graduates the journey to find true happiness is one of self-discovery.

“Find what you love,” she said, emphasizing the first pearl. “You must stay positive in all that you do.

“Expect to succeed,” she continued, explaining the second pearl. “You must be confident in yourself. When you display confidence, you show a part of yourself.

“Finally, live your lives with a purpose,” Crawley said, wrapping up the third pearl. “Determine to make the world a better place.

“The decisions you all make today will affect generations not even born yet,” she added. “You will embrace the dawn of a new day and a new season. This is your night and this is about you.”

Salutatorian Amanda Holmes’ message to the Class of 2014 revolved around facing the unknown and taking that extra step to confront it.

“In the past, we’ve been promoted from kindergarten, elementary, and middle school, and today, we graduate high school,” she said. “Today, we’re being promoted from high school into the real world.

“We did not let the fear of the unknown deter us during those times,” she continued. “We leaped towards it and that’s why we’re sitting here at our graduation.”

Valedictorian James Adkins advised classmates to implement lessons learned throughout their educational careers and apply them to real life.

“Whether you are going to college, the military, or straight into the work field, remember to work hard at everything you do, for the person watching you may be someone who can change your life for the better,” he said. “He or she may be able to open doors and present opportunities that you may have never imagined.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world,” he concluded.

High school principal Stephannie Crutchfield complimented the outgoing senior class.

“You all focused on Charles City High School and making it something you’re proud of,” she said. “Now, take control of your life. Create your own opportunities and don’t use the map someone gave you.”

School board chairwoman Helen Payne-Jones ended the ceremonies by classifying the strength of the outgoing class.

“You all have remained focused with all of the dealings with the schools and I commend you on that,” said the chairwoman. “You all have displayed true character during these tough times.”

This year’s class earned $579,500 in scholarship money.
