Charles City Sheriff’s Office warns of credit card scam
Charles City Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a scam targeting credit card information.
A citizen notified the sheriff’s office on a suspicious call received from a local number (804-829-xxxx). An automated machine asks if the victim would like to lower their credit card rate. If the option to lower the rate is accepted, the victim is transferred to a live operator who will ask for credit card information on the card that the victim wishes to lower their rate on. After receiving the information, the operator hangs up immediately.
Charles City Sheriff’s Office says under no circumstances should your credit card information or banking information to anyone be given to anybody who asks for it.
If you have any information or know of anybody who has been a victim, contact the sheriff’s office at 829-9265 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
