Cantor to resign from position in U.S. Congress on Aug. 18

Eric Cantor, the current New Kent representative in the United States Congress, will be stepping down from his position effective Aug. 18.

The decision came through an Aug. 1 press release through his office.

“It has been the highest honor of my professional life to serve the people of Virginia’s 7th District in Congress,” he said. “During this time of transition for me and my family, it is my foremost desire to ensure that representation is maintained for the people of the 7th District.”

Cantor expects Governor Terry McAuliffe to use Election Day in November to fill the vacancy immediately.
