New Kent supervisors approve thru-truck restriction on portion of Stage Road

New Kent supervisors voted to approve a thru-truck restriction on a portion of Stage Road in the county.

Supervisors voted 4-0 (with District 1 representative and chairman Thomas Evelyn absent) to send the process to Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) to prevent trucks from using the road between Eltham Road (Route 33) and New Kent Highway (Route 249).

“That road is definitely not made for truck traffic,” said District 3 representative Patricia Paige. “When there is a back-up on Interstate 64, GIS [Global Information Systems] is redirecting traffic on that road.

“It’s hard enough to pass on that road when it’s two cars,” she concluded.

According to supervisors, Stage Road has been used as a cut-through for vehicles when Interstate 64 is backed up. If the thru-truck restriction is granted, vehicles would have to travel to the intersection of Route 249 and Route 33 instead of using Stage Road.

“Even then, Route 249 was not made for truck traffic,” chimed in District 5 representative John Lockwood. “Unfortunately, vehicles still drive on it like it’s the interstate.”
