Hampton man convicted of leading high-speed chase in New Kent receives six months in jail
A Hampton man who fled from law enforcement officers in New Kent will spend the next six months in jail after entering into a plea deal Monday morning in New Kent Circuit Court.
Omare Elijah Foster, 20, of the 30 block of Ferncliff Drive, entered guilty pleas to one count each of felony eluding of police, misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm, violation of felony pretrial services, misdemeanor violation of pretrial services, and two counts of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor as part of a plea agreement. One charge each of misdemeanor driving suspended and misdemeanor reckless driver were dropped as part of the deal.
In a summary of evidence provided by New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick, on May 27, 2023, deputies were involved in a chase on Pocahontas Trail with a suspect where speeds reached up to 105 miles per hour. The vehicle began traveling eastbound in the westbound lane, with witnesses saying the suspect was waving an item out the window, which was later identified as a gun. The vehicle eventually entered into James City County and the officers witnessed the driver move from his seat into the passenger seat. That person was identified as Foster and taken into custody. Two juveniles were also in the vehicle during the time of the chase.
Under the agreement, Foster received a five-year sentence with four years, six months suspended (six months to serve) on the felony eluding conviction. He will also serve 10 days on the felony violation of pretrial services as he failed to appear on the charge during an earlier arranged court day. All time on the misdemeanor violation of pretrial services were suspended.
Foster was also placed in the First Offender Program on the two contributing to the delinquency of a minor charges and the single charge of misdemeanor handling of a firearm. If he successfully completes the First Offender program, those three charges will be dismissed.
