A Newport News man has entered into a plea agreement stemming from a credit card larceny and will now spend the next two years in jail.

Zayon Lavon Robinson, 40, of the 200 block of Susan Constant Drive, entered an Alford Plea of Guilt to one count each of credit card larceny, misdemeanor obstruction of justice, and misdemeanor driving suspended as part of Aug. 27 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. One charge of assault on a law enforcement officer was dropped as part of the plea deal. An Alford Plea of Guilt indicates while the defendant maintains his innocence, evidence presented in the case would be enough to convict the defendant of the crimes.

In a summary of evidence provided by New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick, on Nov. 24, 2023, a police officer pulled over a vehicle for a traffic infraction. The driver, later identified as Robinson, did not have a license at the time and the vehicle was subject to be towed. A search of his vehicle discovered five credit cards and a wallet that did not belong to him. He was arrested and taken into custody and while he was in jail, became combative with officers.

Robinson received a 10-year sentence with eight years suspended (two years to serve) on the credit card larceny conviction. All 12 months on both the misdemeanor obstruction and misdemeanor driving suspended convictions were suspended. He must also pay a fine of $1,000.
