A Barhamsville man will spend the next 14 months in jail for possessing a Schedule I/II substance in New Kent.

Thomas Ray Walton, 30, of the 5600 block of Country Drive, entered guilty pleas to one count each of possession of a Schedule I/II drug, an amended charge of misdemeanor obstruction of justice (originally assault and battery on a law enforcement officer), and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated (second offense) as part of an agreement reached Monday morning in New Kent Circuit Court. One charge of delivering drugs to a prisoner was dropped as part of the agreement.

In a summary of evidence provided by New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick, on July 31, 2024, a New Kent deputy observed a vehicle traveling in New Kent County with a driver who was wanted out of Gloucester. A traffic stop was executed and the driver, identified as Walton, was removed from the vehicle. As the vehicle was impounded, a search yielded narcotics, needles, and Narcan. Walton was placed into custody and while he was being arrested, an officer noticed him shove something down his pants on two occasions. A search of his person was executed, with the white powdery substance being identified as Fentanyl after a forensics lab test.

Walton received a 10-year sentence with eight years, 10 months suspended (one year, two months to serve) on the possession of a Schedule I/II drug conviction. All 12 months on both the misdemeanor obstruction of justice and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated were suspended.

In other circuit court matters:

–George Michael Adams II, 34, of the 6300 block of Hickory Fork Road, Gloucester, entered a guilty plea to a single count of driving under the influence while suspended (third of subsequent offense) as part of a plea agreement. One charge of driving revoked (DWI manslaughter related-second offense) was dropped as part of the deal.

In a summary of evidence, on May 1, 2024, a Virginia State Trooper executed a traffic stop on a vehicle on a vehicle with expired license plates. The driver, identified as Adams, had multiple DUIs and was convicted previously of driving under the influence-felony related.

Adams received a five-year sentence with four years suspended (one year to serve).

–Zachary Steven Martin, of Quinton, entered a guilty plea to a single charge of possession of a Schedule I/II drug as part of a plea agreement.

In a summary of evidence, on Mar. 29, 2024, a New Kent deputy observed a green sedan with no inspection sticker pull into the Star Express in the Quinton area of the county. When the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed a cigar package in the floorboard and identified the driver as Martin. When questioned if there were drugs in the vehicle, Martin admitted to having a bag of cocaine in the center console. A search of the vehicle was conducted, and the substance was retrieved and sent to the forensics lab where it was confirmed to be cocaine.

Under the agreement, Martin will enter into the First Offender Program. If he successfully completes the one-year program, the charge will be dismissed.

–Latrelle Jovon Williams, of Little Plymouth, entered a guilty plea to driving revoked (DUI related) as part of a plea deal. One charge of misdemeanor driving suspended was dropped.

In a summary of evidence, on Feb. 25, 2024, a New Kent deputy observed a Ford Explorer near the Washington Burgess Inn that provided information that the owner’s license was revoked to a previous DUI.
