A Richmond man who stole construction materials from a residence in New Kent County will spend the next 14 months in jail.
Jayvon Marquise Harris, 29, entered guilty pleas to one count each of grand larceny and intent to sell stolen property as part of a plea agreement reached Monday afternoon in New Kent Circuit Court. Six charges of obtaining money by false pretenses, two additional charges of grand larceny, and two additional charges of intent to sell stolen property were dropped as part of the plea deal.
In a summary of evidence by New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick, on Mar. 1, 2024, a New Kent deputy responded to the residence of Charles Bartlett, who had reported that siding from his residence had been stolen. During the deputy’s investigation, a Goochland detective called New Kent Sheriff’s Office, advising them that they were investigating individuals who had committed similar crimes. The investigation developed two suspects, with one of them being Harris. A search warrant was executed with information revealing that Harris had rented a moving truck. Furthermore, the warrant allowed for the defendant’s cell phone to be searched. When looking through Harris’ phone, investigators discovered messages between Harris and a co-defendant, mentioning places to meet up for the siding exchange. The building material that was stolen was intended to be sold to a purchaser in North Carolina, who was also interviewed as part of the investigation. In total, approximately $7,400 in material was taken in the New Kent crimes.
Under the plea agreement, Harris received a 10-year jail sentence with eight years, 10 months suspended (one year, two months to serve) on the grand larceny conviction. All 10 years on the intent to sell stolen property were suspended. He must also pay $2,000 in total fines.

The officer was able to locate the vehicle, which had pulled in a driveway and had its hazard lights on. That vehicle left the driveway and began driving down the road with the hazard lights on. The officer attempted a traffic stop to see if the driver was alright, but the car continued to drive normally. Eventually, a second officer pulled to the side, telling the driver, later identified as Williams, to pull over. After Williams pulled over, officers removed him from the vehicle for his safety. As the defendant got out, a pipe fell out of his pocket to the ground. That item was sent to the forensics lab, with tests revealing the substance to be cocaine. In addition, a second pipe with residue was discovered in the vehicle as well.
Under the agreement, Williams received a 10-year jail sentence with nine years suspended (one year to serve). He must also pay a fine of $1,000.
