A Fredericksburg man will spend six years in prison after being sentenced for involuntary manslaughter involving alcohol that claimed the life of a Hopewell resident.

Jules Jamar Stewart, 31, received formal sentencing on the lone count following Friday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court.

During a March 4 trial, during the early morning hours of Aur. 23, 2022, a white 2010 Ford Focus struck a 2002 Ford Explorer at the intersection of Roxbury Road and Wayside Road near the Colonial Mart Gas Station. The Focus, driven by Stewart, collided with the Explorer that was driven by Catherine Breeding. The accident resulted in Breeding’s vehicle overturning and landing in a grassy area near the gas station. Unfortunately, Breeding did not survive the accident.

Stewart was transferred to the hospital where his blood-alcohol content level was .141, nearly double the legal limit.

During Friday morning’s sentencing, several members of Breeding’s family read victim impact statement. Statements were made about how difficult the family’s lives have become, with one being made by the victim’s now eight-year-old daughter who admitted she misses going to the park with her mother.

Stewart received a 10-year sentence with four years suspended (six years to serve). In other circuit court matters:

–Leon Wesley Charity, 66, of the 3400 block of Barnetts Road, Charles City, entered a guilty plea to possession of a Schedule I/II drug.

In a summary of evidence, on Jan. 10, Charles City officers were interviewing Charity on an unrelated event when they noticed odd behavior. The suspicious behavior led to a search of Charity, who was discovered to have a substance on him that was later identified as cocaine. He was arrested and placed into custody.

Under the agreement, Charity entered into the First Offender Program for the offence. If he successfully completes the program, the charge will be dismissed.

–Chrisotpher Glen Greiner, 38, of the 12000 block of Cosby Mill Road, Richmond, entered guilty pleas to one count each of damaging a catalytic converter, possession of burglary tools, and larceny of checks.

In a summary of evidence, on Dec. 30, 2023, Greiner was caught removing several catalytic converters from vehicles at No Limit Customs, where he was working at the time. He also forged a check from Apollo Shaw, who was his boss at the time, in the amount of $1,200 and wrote it to himself.

Greiner received a five-year sentence with four years, six months suspended (six months to serve) for damaging the catalytic converters. All 10years on the check larceny was suspended. He was placed in the First Offender program for the possession of burglary tools and will spend 10 days in jail on a felony failure-to-appear conviction.
