James Richard Duncan

James Richard “Rick” Duncan, of Quinton, Virginia, made his way to his eternal home on May 11, 2024.

Rick was born in Hampton, Virginia, on November 9, 1957. He spent his childhood there and as an adult, moved to New Kent.

Rick enjoyed a career in emergency services. He started out as a volunteer firefighter with Company 1 in New Kent, where he served as Chief for a time. In December 1987, he was hired as a firefighter with the City of Richmond, where he worked full-time until his retirement in July 2016. Upon his retirement, he pursued a career with New Kent Sheriff’s Office as a communications officer.

Over the years, Rick taught many different classes to firefighters, medics, doctors, and nurses. He taught most of those classes at Health Educators. He enjoyed teaching and always tried to be a stress-free instructor.

In his spare time, Rick enjoyed many things throughout life such as hunting, riding, motorcycles, playing golf, and watching sports. His greatest joys were spending time with his wife, daughter, and his church family including the Ark Arsenal teams. He was often referred to as the team ‘Grandpa’.

Rick is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lindy; his daughter, Maggie; his sisters, Libby Downey (Butch) and Brenda Baldwin (Jim); and numerous other family members including his fur babies Lilly and Diesel.

The family would like to thank Brandon Hertless for all his help and love over the past year.

The family received friends on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Vincent Funeral Home in Providence Forge. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Journey Christian Fellowship in Quinton, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to either the American Heart Association or to the Ark Athletics, 3020 New Kent Highway, Quinton, VA 23141, in memory of the Team Grandpa.
