For one half, New Kent’s Lady Trojans remained within striking distance of Jamestown’s visiting Eagles. Although the offense never got off a shot, the Lady Trojans’ defense surrendered just two goals.

But the Eagles took over after the break, wearing down the hosts on the way to a 6-0 Bay Rivers District field hockey shutout. With the Sept. 24 outcome, New Kent fell to 0-5 in district play and 2-6 overall.

“We started strong, but we kind of got down on ourselves after that,” said Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth.

“We came out flat in the second half,” he said. “They beat us in transition, and we just didn’t have the legs to stick with them.”

Jamestown managed just two shots over the contest’s initial 15 minutes, but both slipped past Lady Trojan goalkeeper Megan Bland. Five minutes into the match, Jamestown’s Ally Johnson broke the scoreless deadlock, and midway through the half, she struck again.

Bland repelled three Eagle shots before the break and two more afterward, but Johnson completed the hat trick to start the visitors’ second half surge. New Kent got off its lone shot for the match early in the second half.
