Jamestown running attack powers past New Kent, 33-12

During the week heading into his team’s football clash with Jamestown’s Eagles, New Kent coach Dan Rounds said considerable time was spent responding to adverse situations that are the nature of the game. And so far this season, his winless Trojans have faced a ton of adversity.
What transpires on the practice field, however, does not always equate to success on the playing field. Despite being prepared to face adversity, the Trojans had no answer for the visiting Eagles’ ground game that featured two backs eclipsing 100 yards. New Kent fell for the sixth straight time 33-12 in the Oct. 5 Bay Rivers District encounter.
“In football, you’re going to have adversity,” Rounds said afterward. “We’re trying to have the guys react positively to adversity and realize it isn’t the end of the world if things go bad.
“This is a good place to learn how to handle it and learn a valuable life lesson,” he said.
“But there’s a compounding effect of bad play after bad play,” he added. “It just seems to snowball.”
Early on, however, the Trojans placed Jamestown in the role of coping with adversity. On the New Kent’s third play from scrimmage after taking the opening kickoff, running back Trey Lee ripped off 46 yards to the Eagle seven yard line.
But the Eagles reacted well, stopping the Trojans on downs at the one yard line. From there, the visitors embarked on a 15-play, 99-yard drive to take an 8-0 lead.
New Kent bounced back, thanks mostly to an Eagle miscue. In punt formation, the Eagle snap sailed high over the head of punter Matt Perry. Perry recovered the ball, but was buried by Trojan defenders at the Eagle six yard line. On the next play, Lee burst over the right side to close the gap to 8-6.
But back came adversity for New Kent on the ensuing kickoff. Eagle return man Mike Mason took advantage of a Trojan special teams breakdown to race 90 yards for a 14-8 lead. The visitors added another TD just before the half and scored on their first possession of the second half to put the game out of reach.
New Kent took advantage of another Eagle punt formation problem to score its second TD. This time, Perry mishandled the snap and was tackled at the Eagle 23. From there, quarterback Luke Mechling hooked up with wide receiver Chase Dunn for the touchdown.
