NK athletes earn Group AA berths
Several New Kent indoor track and field athletes qualified for the state Group AA indoor track and field championships held Feb. 23 at Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg.
For the girls, Goodlet qualified in two events, running 7.67 in the 55 meter dash to place fourth, and 43.13 in the 300 meter dash for third. Teammates Daysa Jones and Taylor Stevens finished third and sixth in the pole vault with heights of nine feet and eight feet, respectively. Ashley Pierce’s leap of 15’5½” in long jump earned a trip to the meet as well. Taylor James qualified in triple jump by finishing in sixth with a leap of 32’6½”.
For the boys, Savage and Coy Robinson both finished third in their respective events to qualify for the state championship.
Savage ran a time of 4:36.70 in the 1600 meter run, while Robinson ran 37.07 in the 300 meter dash. Darren Jones qualified in triple jump with a sixth place finish and a mark of 41’3½” while the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams also qualified, taking second and third place times of 3:33.28 and 8:21.95. respectively.
New Kent’s girls and boys teams both finished eighth at the Region I meet at the Boo Williams Sports Complex in Hampton. The girls scored 21 points while the boys amassed 27 points. Bay Rivers foes Tabb (girls) and Lafayette (boys) won the meet.
