Wind and extreme cold failed to alter pitching performances by New Kent’s Matt Metheny and Warhill’s Mike Brumfield. Metheny limited Warhill to three hits while Brumfield pitched a four-hitter.

But in the end, Warhill managed the deciding run in the seventh and final frame, breaking a 1-1 deadlock to escape with a 2-1 Bay Rivers District baseball win.

“Both pitchers pitched extremely well,” said New Kent coach Ronnie Cox. “Matt was outstanding. I really feel bad because we couldn’t give him any run support.

“In the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, we had people in scoring position, but we just couldn’t drive them in,” he added.

Warhill took advantage of a Trojan error to take a 1-0 lead in the second. Brumfield, meanwhile, maintained a shutout until the Trojan sixth.

Brumfield issued a one-out walk to Mason Downer. Jake Countiss followed with a grounder that third baseman Lucas Rice mishandled to put two aboard. Dylan Walton then stroked a single past first baseman Hunter Hux to drive in Downer for the tying run.

“But other than Dylan, we didn’t get timely hits,” said Cox, whose team fell to 1-2.

Warhill got a leadoff single from Jordan Hackney in the seventh. A throwing error on Thomas Richardson’s bunt put runners in scoring position for Hayden Johnston, who lofted a fly ball to center to drive in the deciding run.
