Despite a brisk breeze and wind chills below freezing, Marisa Bush fired a no-hitter and New Kent’s offense backed their pitcher with runs in every inning as the Lady Trojans remained unbeaten with a 10-0 shutout of Warhill’s visiting Lions.

Last Thursday’s outcome raised New Kent’s record to 3-0 in Bay Rivers District softball.

“Considering the weather and our warm-up, it wasn’t the best of situations,” said Lady Trojan head coach Nicole O’Bier. “But we came out and did well. We made plays and got hits.”

Bush, meanwhile, struck out seven while not allowing a hit although five Lions reached base on walks.

“I think she did an exceptional job,” added O’Bier.

Brittany LaPrade tripled home Karley Allen (walk) to start the New Kent run parade in the first. Bush helped her own cause in the second, driving in Madison Beasley (triple) to open a 2-0 lead.

The hosts broke open the game with a five-run third. Dani Foster and Peyton Fleming both singled and scored on LaPrade’s second triple. LaPrade trotted home on Kristen Saunders’ sacrifice fly before Emi Peterson singled and scored on Beasley’s second triple. Beasley made it a 7-0 contest, scoring on Emily Silver’s single.

New Kent added three more runs in the fourth. Foster tripled down the right field line and beat the throw to the plate on a Fleming grounder. Saunders singled to put two aboard for Beasley who stroked a two-run single to center.

Bush retired the Lions in order in the fifth to end the game.
