Jones, Adkins multiple wins power CC in season finale

Charles City’s Daron Jones won four events while teammate Cruz Adkins was a double event winner as the Panthers scored 93 points to close out their regular season with a first place finish at last Tuesday’s Tri-Rivers district track meet at Charles City.

The hosts had no trouble in the meet, outdistancing second place Sussex Central’s 62.5 points. Windsor’s 53, Surry’s 38, and Chesterfield Community’s 23.5 rounded out the scoring.

Jones accounted for 32 points with wins in high jump (6’2”), long jump (18’9½), triple jump (40’3”), and the 110 hurdles (16.66). Adkins claimed titles in the 400 meter dash (55.46) and 800 meter run (2:23.24). Other individual event winners were Keith Williams in the shot with a heave of 39’11”, and Jaelen Williams’ discus victory with a toss of 99’4”.

On the girls’ side, Sara Whitehead and Shateka Brown posted individual victories as the Lady Panthers scored 51 points to earn a third place finish.

Whitehead’s leap of 13’2½” in the long jump and Brown’s leap of 27’10” in the triple jump helped the hosts as they placed behind Windsor’s 90, Sussex Central’s 53, and ahead of Surry County’s 16.
