The scoreboard at the end of the first half could have read Tabb 29 Paige Simpson 6.

Simpson scored all of New Kent’s first half points as a sluggish performance on the part of the Lady Trojans enabled Tabb’s visiting Tigers, who came in winless at 0-4, to take a commanding lead.

New Kent turned up the tempo with a press after the break, but it was too little, too late. The Tigers gave up no ground in posting a 56-31 basketball win in last Thursday’s affair.

“We didn’t come out strong in the first half,” said Lady Trojan coach Ayla Young after her team fell to 2-3. “I guess we’re not in shape. We’ve got to get after it more.”

Simpson scored all of her points in the first quarter, but New Kent trailed 19-6. Tabb added just 10 in the second period, and the Lady Trojans were shut out.

“We were just standing there,” Young said. “We weren’t attacking the basket. We were just going to spots and expecting to get it.”

Adrienne Goodlet warmed up in the second half, pumping in a game-high 18 points. Teammates Kirsten Gipson and Anna Mathis tossed in four and three, respectively.
