New Kent’s Lady Trojans had their way in the early going against Jamestown’s visiting Eagles. But an 11-0 Eagle run over a three-minute span of the first quarter reversed the hosts’ fortunes.
Jamestown went on from there to a 60-38 win, handing New Kent its first basketball loss of the season after an opening triumph at York.
Lady Trojan Adrienne Goodlet drove the length of the floor after grabbing a rebound to opening the night’s scoring. Next, she dished off to Paige Simpson to put the hosts up 4-0. After a Jamestown field goal, Kirsten Gipson sank a pair of free throws for a 6-2 margin.
Jamestown, however, scored the next 11 points. Goodlet struck twice as the first quarter wound down, pulling New Kent back within striking distance at 15-10, but the visitors opened the second quarter with another run to build a 23-10 advantage. The hosts never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
First-year Lady Trojan coach Ayla Young said her game plan coming in centered on spreading the floor on offense and getting the ball players in the high post.
“We didn’t do a very good job of it,” she said. “If we had been able to swing the ball around, we could have done better.
“Defensively, we should have put more pressure on them,” she added.
Goodlet tossed in a game-high 12 points while Simpson finished with eight. Mikayla Scorsone scored five followed by Anna Mathis’ four, Logyn Mills’ three, and two each from Gipson, Sarah Major, and Becky Anderson.
