York’s visiting Falcons scored early and often, using their overall team speed to race past New Kent’s Trojans 12-1 in today’s (Tuesday) soccer clash.
Less than three minutes into the contest, the Falcons owned a 2-0 lead. They never looked back in handing the Trojans their fourth straight setback following a season opening win against Essex.
“We should have played a lot better than we did,” said Trojan coach Clinton Leckie. “We were very disorganized, and it got ugly.”
Fifteen minutes into the first half, the Falcon lead had ballooned to 5-0. Five minutes later, the Trojans averted a shutout on a Josiah Schlosser pass to Darren McCaughan who blasted a shot past York keeper Jacob Reimers to get the hosts on the scoreboard.
But York pushed in three more goals before halftime, upping the advantage to 8-1 at the break. In the end, the Falcons had converted half of their 24 shots for the game into goals and limited the Trojans to five shots.
New Kent keeper Richard Flournoy stopped 11 Falcon shots. Reimers and his second half replacement, Zach Brandt, combined for three saves.
“[The Falcons] are good, but nothing compared to what’s coming up,” Leckie said, looking ahead to clashes with powerhouses Lafayette and Grafton.
“We’ve got to figure out the mistakes we’re making and make corrections,” he said. “Tonight this was like a sloppy kickball game. That’s the way I see it.”
