New Kent’s Lady Trojans and Poquoson’s Lady Islanders own a long history of hotly contested, highly competitive softball encounters over the years. Both consistently ranked at or near the top in the old Bay Rivers District.

Friday, New Kent entertained a Poquoson team that bears little resemblance to the powerhouses of the past. For the Lady Trojans, the contest amounted to batting practice as the hosts unleashed 14 hits, pummeling the Islanders 10-0 in game stopped after five innings on the slaughter rule.

“We have been hitting the ball, but the past couple of games have been kind of a struggle,” said Lady Trojan coach Nicole O’Bier. “It’s nice to have a game like this to get our confidence up. The girls did a wonderful job today.”

The Lady Trojans pounced on the Islanders for five first inning runs. Dani Foster poked a leadoff single and Peyton Fleming reached on an error to set up Brittany LaPrade’s two-run double. Madison Beasley’s triple drove in LaPrade while Emily Angle and Stephanie Torrence followed with RBI singles.

New Kent bats cooled somewhat until the fourth when a seven-hit, five-run explosion put the game away. Abby Spangler and Foster singled, bringing up Fleming who stroked a two-run single down the left field line. Simpson beat out an infield hit before LaPrade launched a two-run triple to the fence in center field. LaPrade scored the final run on a single off the bat of Beasley.

Lady Trojan pitcher Marisa Bush, meanwhile, fired a two-hitter, striking out six and walking only one as the Lady Trojans improved to 11-3.
