Five-point shortfall leads to third place finish for Panthers in Conference 42 championship meet

Charles City boys’ track team did all they could, but fell short by five points in claiming the Conference 42 Track & Field Championships, settling for third at the May 21 home contest.
The Panthers put together a 112 point effort at the meet, finishing five points behind meet winner Middlesex’s 117 points, and one point behind Mathews’ 113 points for second place. West Point’s 91 and King & Queen’s 50 rounded up the scoring.
The hosts received individual wins from Jaquane Wyatt in the 200 meter dash (24.97) and Craig McElroy in the high jump (5’8”). Wyatt and McElroy teamed up with Marvin Brown and Mason Jefferson to claim the 4×100 title with a time of 46.16.
On the girls’ side, Taylor Bradby accounted for nine of Charles City’s 11 points en route to a fifth place team finish. Bradby compiled fourth place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles (20.43) and shot (27’0″), and finished sixth in the discus (75’3″). Mathews won the girls’ team title with 114 points, followed by West Point’s 112, Middlesex’s 101, and King & Queen’s 98.
